Skunk digging near a house in Los Angeles

Seeing a skunk in your back yard is one of the most alarming sights in Los Angeles! You need to realize that the animals are not tourists, and are always where they are, for a reason. I hear the same questions all the time, so I will post them, and the typical answer I reply with.

Q. I see a skunk in my yard. Is it lost?

A. No, the skunk isn’t lost. A skunk will go where ever the basic needs are met. And that is the city! Food is something that never runs out here. Fruit trees, bird feeders, garbage, and pet food bowls provide plenty. As far as water, especially during a drought, water can be found all over the city in the form of irrigation for our lawns, swimming pools, and once again, the pets water bowl.

Q. I smell a skunk, what do I do?

A. Call 800-714-8727 asap. Most houses in Southern California don’t have basements, so it is probably right underneath your floor boards. It most likely found its way in a torn screen, or dug its way under dug its way under the house.

Q. I can hear an animal under my house. What do you think it is?

A. Skunks and opossums like to go under houses. Raccoons like to get into attic spaces. All animals will use an entry point to get in a house so they may be sheltered from elements, and predators.

Q. How do I get rid of skunks?

A. Depending on the situation, a critter guy would have several options to get rid of a skunk, or a mother skunk and babies. We need to identify that baby skunks are old enough to walk. We sure don’t want the mother skunk separated from her babies. If the babies can follow, we may use a one way door system. I like using these because the skunks will open the door with there nose, and it closes behind them. They can only open it from one side. With these, we can save the customer money because all the skunks are removed for one price.
